It's been an interesting life so far. My interest in medicine goes back as far as I can remember, but one of my first opportunities to use that interest was in the Boy Scouts of America, first earning, then teaching, the first aid merit badge. Throughout my life, I have been active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in 1981. With that achievement, I joined the National Eagle Scout Association as a life member, and have become active in the Order of the Arrow, achieving brotherhood membership. It has also been my privilege to continue teaching, especially to Explorers, a special division of the Boy Scouts.

My affiliation with the Explorers began after returning from my time in the United States Air Force during the Gulf War. I resumed my college education (which included two years as a volunteer 7th grade teacher at the Amherst Middle School), and joined my hometown ambulance service, the Amherst Rescue Squad. My military training allowed me to test to become a Nationally Registered Paramedic (NREMT-P), one of the first on the service. Being the first anything tends to have its ups and downs, and this was no exception. After the initial "break in" period, however, things worked out well for everyone involved, and I had a blast.
